About Shell Prelude FLNG

From the Shell Australia website

Floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) is a revolutionary technology that will allow Shell to access offshore gas fields that would otherwise be too costly or difficult to develop. Prelude FLNG is the world’s first FLNG development.

The Prelude FLNG facility will be 488m (1,600 feet) long, 74m (240 feet) wide and along with its contents, will weigh around 600,000 tonnes. It will be the largest floating offshore facility in the world.

Once constructed, the facility will be towed to its location, some 475 kilometres (around 300 miles) north-east of Broome, Western Australia.

It will remain permanently moored at the location for around 20-25 years before needing to dock for inspection and overhaul.

Number of opportunities for Jobs at Shell Prelude FLNG

From the Shell Australia website

The project will create around 350 direct and 650 indirect jobs.

Shell started recruiting Australian process and maintenance technicians in 2013. Since then, more than 120 people have been employed and many have been deployed to Geoje, South Korea to work on operations readiness for Prelude.

Most of the service technicians will be recruited in 2015. They will manage the support services for Prelude (rigging, scaffolding crane operations, materials handling and emergency response).

Shell is awarding about 200 contracts to support the Prelude FLNG facility during operations and maintenance.  There will be significant contracting activity throughout 2015, with the award of the facilities management services, maintenance, supply vessels and underwater services contracts taking place this year.

The number of people needed to operate the Prelude FLNG facility is comparable with onshore LNG operations. During normal operations around 240-280 staff will be directly involved in operating the facility offshore (e.g. two shifts of 120-140 people working fly-in, fly-out in rotation).

During maintenance activities the workforce on the facility may go up to 300+ people. There will be a further 100 people in onshore roles and another 650 in support and contractor roles. Recruitment and on boarding for senior positions in operations and maintenance roles has been underway since final investment decision. In 2013, despite being a number of years away from start-up, Shell launched the recruitment campaign for the first two rounds of process and maintenance technicians – those who will work onboard the facility. Recruitment for these technicians will continue through to start up.

Many of these technicians will live and work in Geoje, South Korea for a number of years while the FLNG facility is under construction. Here they will work in operations readiness and assist in the construction project so as to develop a firm understanding of the technology. This means, when the facility is towed to location, those operating the facility are already fully familiar with the technology and systems operation.
