About Roy Hill Iron Ore Mine

From the Roy Hill website

The Roy Hill Project is a 55 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) iron ore mining, rail and port project being developed in West Australia’s Pilbara region.

Situated approximately 115 kilometres north of Newman, Roy Hill is a world-class,
low phosphorus, Marra Mamba iron ore deposit located in the Pilbara – one of the world’s premier iron ore provinces – and the only independent iron ore project with West Australian majority ownership.

The Project will consist of a:

  • Conventional open pit, bulk mining operation from multiple production benches
  • 55Mtpa wet processing plant
  • 344 kilometre single line, heavy haul railway
  • Purpose built, dedicated two berth iron ore port facility at Port Hedland, capable of receiving, stockpiling, screening and exporting 55Mtpa (wet) of direct shipped iron ore as lump and fines.

The Roy Hill Project has a defined mineralisation of more than 2.3bt of +50% Fe iron ore of which 1.2bt is +55% Fe, enough to sustain a mine life of more than 20 years

Roy Hill is on track to load its first shipment of ore for export in late 2015.

Roy Hill operations consists of three key parts:

Roy Hill Mine and Processing

The Roy Hill Mine has an initial mine life of 17 years, with a likely extension beyond that of 12 years. Roy Hill is an owner operator, conventional open pit, drill and blast, truck and excavator bulk mining operation.

Roy Hill’s purpose built, world class mine processing plant will utilise low risk, proven technology to process 55Mtpa (Wet) of lump and fines iron ore. It and will be the largest single feed processing plant in the Pilbara region.

A wet processing and beneficiating model has been selected, as approximately
70 per cent of the bedded ore resource is below the water table and contains wet, sticky plastic, clay-rich shale bands, which are difficult to handle in a dry crushing and screening process.

Roy Hill Rail

Roy Hill’s independently owned and operated railway is a 344km standard gauge, single line, heavy haul railway built to transport 55Mtpa of iron ore from the Roy Hill Mine to the dedicated Port stockyard facility, in the Boodarie Industrial Estate south of Port Hedland.

Five ore trains per day will operate from the Roy Hill Mine, each consisting of two diesel electric locomotives hauling 232 ore cars with a total payload of 31,132 tonnes of ore. Due to the undulating nature of the terrain to the north of the mine, for the first 30 kilometres of the journey to Port Hedland, each train will initially be assisted by rear located, manned banker locomotives.

Roy Hill Port

Roy Hill’s purpose built, world class iron ore port facility at Port Hedland is capable of receiving, stockpiling, screening and exporting 55Mtpa of iron ore as lump and fines and has been designed to accommodate possible future expansion.

The Port stockyard has the capacity to store over 2.3 million tonnes, with ten 230,000 tonne live stockpiles, with space to store additional material as necessary.
