About the WestConnex Project
From the WestConnex website
As Australia’s global city, Sydney is facing some key challenges which need to be addressed to ensure the city’s economic prosperity is supported.
Forecast growth in heavy vehicle movements across Sydney, doubling of passenger and freight movement at Sydney Airport, increased goods passing through Port Botany and population and employment growth along the M5 and M4 corridors are just some of the reasons why Sydney needs WestConnex.
Delivering WestConnex will not only help address this growth, it will deliver more than $20 billion in economic benefits to NSW.
WestConnex will provide a widened M4, from Church Street, Parramatta to near Concord Road and an extension of the M4 via a tunnel under the Parramatta Road corridor to Parramatta Road and City West Link, Haberfield.
Leighton Contractors – Rizzani de Eccher Australia JV has been selected by the WestConnex Delivery Authority (WDA) to design and construct the M4 Widening, contract value is approximately $150 million. Major work is scheduled to start in early 2015 and the M4 Widening is due to open to traffic in 2017.
Leighton Contractors, John Holland and Samsung C&T JV to deliver the M4 East Motorway as part of the first stage of WestConnex. Seven kilometres in total length, the M4 East will join the M4 Widening at Homebush Bay Drive and provide a 5.5 kilometre tunnel with three lanes in each direction from the M4 at North Strathfield to Parramatta Road and the City West Link, Haberfield. Major work is scheduled to start in 2016 and the M4 East is due to open to traffic in 2019. Approximately a $2.7 billion contract.
Will run from the existing M5 East corridor at Beverly Hills via tunnel to St Peters, providing improved access to the airport, south Sydney and Port Botany precincts.
Key features of the New M5 include:
- New twin tunnels which are higher, wider and flatter, which will more than double capacity along the M5 East corridor and provide motorway access to north of Sydney Airport.
- A new interchange at an industrial site at St Peters, which reduces the impact on nearby residential areas.
- Connections from the interchange to key roads in the area, including Campbell Road/Street, Euston Road and across the canal to Bourke Road.
- Widening of Campbell Road/Street and Euston Road through existing road widening reservations.
Work to get under way from 2015, starting with the upgrading of the M5 – King Georges Road interchange
Will deliver a motorway tunnel with three lanes in each direction between the first two stages, linking the M4 and M5 corridors together. Initial investigations by WestConnex Delivery Authority into a possible northern extension of WestConnex towards ANZAC Bridge have led to the realignment of the Stage 3 indicative route. This new alignment will continue to support the reduction of traffic on Parramatta Road enabling urban renewal, and in addition will support the NSW Government’s proposed future Western Harbour Tunnel and will help provide a much needed western bypass of the CBD. It will generally travel north of Parramatta Road corridor from Haberfield with connections at Rozelle before heading south near Camperdown and connect to St Peters Interchange. Further work is being carried out to develop the route and delivery strategy.
